Increase in Transportation Costs Raises Concerns in Nuevo León

The Coparmex Nuevo León alerts about the increase in transportation spending for local families, which has risen by 30.8% from 2020 to 2022. This rise exacerbates existing mobility issues and dissatisfaction with public transport services.

Increase in Transportation Costs Raises Concerns in Nuevo León

The employer sector of Nuevo León expressed its concern about the increase in transportation expenses that families in the region are experiencing, placing the state in the tenth position nationally in this regard, according to information from Coparmex Nuevo León.

According to an analysis conducted by this business organization, based on data from the National Survey of Income and Expenditures of Households (ENIGH) by INEGI, made public in 2023, there is a 30.8% increase in public transportation spending by families in Nuevo León from 2020 to 2022. The study also reveals that in 2022, the transportation spending of households in Nuevo León exceeded the national average by 3.5%.

Cecilia Carrillo López, director of Coparmex Nuevo León, highlighted the seriousness of the mobility problem faced by families in the state and warned that increases in fares will only heighten existing discontent. In the words of Carrillo López: “What do we want, what is desirable? That families receive a quality, fair, efficient service, which means their commutes do not result in the loss of hours they could spend with their families.”

The detailed analysis by Coparmex shows that Nuevo León is surpassed in transportation spending by entities such as Mexico City, State of Mexico, Querétaro, and Quintana Roo, among others. In the specific case of Nuevo León, a gradual increase in public transportation fares went into effect this month, which will reach 17 pesos by August 2026, representing a 41% increase compared to the 12 pesos that some routes still charged and a 13% increase compared to those charging 15 pesos.

When comparing the public transportation spending of families in Nuevo León with other important metropolitan areas in the country, such as Jalisco, it is observed that the state surpasses it by 21.7%. Spending allocated to this sector represented 3.4% of the total expenses of households in Nuevo León in 2022, according to INEGI.

Carrillo López pointed out that the increase in urban transportation in Nuevo León coincides with an economic slowdown forecast for 2025, which could be exacerbated by new international policies. Furthermore, she emphasized that the increase in transportation spending is partly due to the lack of public transportation units, which has led families to opt for higher-cost platform services.
