Tension in Monterrey Amidst Trump's Tariff Threats

The business community of Nuevo León is divided between two expectations regarding the measures announced by Donald Trump. On one hand, there is concern over the possibility of tariffs on Mexican goods starting in February. On the other hand, there is some optimism, as some believe that Mexico and its businesses could benefit from the conflict between Trump and China.

The announcement of possible tariffs has already generated tension among the business community of Nuevo León, which views the situation with concern. Some experts consider Marcelo Ebrard's stance in the negotiations to be a cause for worry, despite acknowledging his negotiation skills are greater than those of Juan Ramón De la Fuente. There is uncertainty regarding Trump's receptiveness toward the Mexican Secretary of Economy.

Criticism of the Mexican government's response came quickly, as many consider it to be lukewarm and failing to grasp the seriousness of the situation. There is also concern that Juan Ramón De la Fuente has a limited agenda in Washington, casting doubt on his ability to establish a dialogue with Trump's circle and diffuse the situation.

Trump's recent absence from comments about China during a phone call with Xi Jinping raised concerns among the business community of Nuevo León, which fears that the dispute between the two countries could affect Mexico and enhance the practice of nearshoring in the north of the country. Additionally, the reaction of Claudia Sheinbaum has also raised anxiety in the business sector.

On the other hand, the company Xignux has recognized that tariffs could impact up to 60% of its electric transformer production. According to company spokespeople, Xignux has operations in the United States and employs 1,900 people in the neighboring country. This situation has put the company and its workers on alert due to the uncertainty generated by the potential tariff conflict between Mexico and the United States.
