The delays in the construction of the metro in Monterrey are having a significant economic impact on the daily lives of its inhabitants. In addition to the traffic problems in areas such as Arena Monterrey, Auditorio Citibanamex, and Escenario GNP Seguros, these delays are harming various businesses in the city, including the entertainment industry, such as concerts.
A concrete example of this situation is the case of the band Chicago, which used to perform in Monterrey during their tours in Mexico, but in their most recent tour, they have chosen not to include the city in their itinerary, opting instead for cities like Guadalajara, Mexico City, Puebla, Torreón, Querétaro, and Mérida.
Carlos Peña, CEO of OPENSHOW, a company dedicated to organizing events such as concerts and shows, expressed his concern about the negative impact that delays in metro construction have had on event logistics in the city. There has been severe congestion in the area from Revolución to the aforementioned venues, making it difficult for the public to access and affecting attendance at such events.
Despite the promises made by the governor of Nuevo León, Samuel García, regarding the completion of part of the metro lines before the start of the 2026 World Cup, uncertainty persists. The ups and downs in the progress of metro construction, largely caused by budgetary restrictions, are causing concern in the entertainment sector, which is already facing a challenging economic landscape.
In addition to the logistical problems caused by metro delays, the current economic situation is also impacting ticket sales for events, as economic uncertainty decreases the public's purchasing power and makes it difficult to fill venues. Peña pointed out that the combination of these factors is creating additional difficulties for the entertainment sector in Monterrey.
