Monterrey has become a magnet for medical tourism, attracting a growing number of international patients thanks to its world-class hospital infrastructure, competitive costs, and proximity to the United States. From high-level plastic surgeries to specialized dental treatments, the city capitalizes on this trend that already contributes millions of dollars to the economy of Nuevo León.
The hospital sector benefits from investments in advanced technology such as Da Vinci robotics, while the hotel sector offers "all-inclusive" packages that include recovery in luxury suites. Trade and transportation also see an increase in their profits, as families spend on retail and dining during their stay, and airlines experience an increase in medical flights to Monterrey.
While cities like Mexico City and Guadalajara focus on volume and Tijuana sees its leadership decline due to security issues, Monterrey bets on exclusivity and high specialization in medical tourism. With a 25% increase in medical flights since 2024, Monterrey International Airport reflects the growing demand in this area.
Medical tourism in Monterrey has generated over $320 million in 2024, representing 1.8% of the state’s Gross Domestic Product. If economic growth can be balanced with equitable access, Nuevo León will not only attract more international patients but will also elevate the health standard for the local population.
In this context, plastic surgery stands out as an important engine of the sector, with ISAPS-certified surgeons attending to patients seeking rhinoplasties, liposuctions, and breast augmentations at significantly lower costs than in their home countries, mainly the United States and Canada. Some clinics report occupancy rates above 80%, generating over $50 million annually just in this field.
