Insecurity Perception in Monterrey Reaches New Highs

Monterrey sees a significant rise in insecurity perception, with 69.2% of residents feeling unsafe. Meanwhile, other municipalities show improving trends.


Insecurity Perception in Monterrey Reaches New Highs

In the last quarter of last year, Monterrey experienced a significant increase in levels of perceived insecurity, surpassing other municipalities in the Metropolitan Area. According to the National Urban Security Survey (ENSU) conducted by Inegi, in December 2024, 69.2% of the population over 18 in Monterrey felt unsafe, an increase of 15.91% compared to the previous quarter.

In contrast, San Pedro Garza García, although it also experienced an increase in perceived insecurity during the same period, remained the safest municipality in the country with 14%. Other municipalities like Guadalupe saw an increase in perceived insecurity, reaching 50.4% in December, an increase of 6.55%.

On the other hand, some municipalities managed to improve their perception of safety. Apodaca reduced this parameter by 21.23%, reaching 33.4% last December. Escobedo and Santa Catarina also saw improvements, with levels of perceived insecurity at 47.9% and 46.9% respectively.

San Nicolás stood out as the second municipality in the Metropolitan Area of Monterrey where residents feel safest, maintaining its perception of insecurity at 28.6%.

Annually, five of the seven municipalities analyzed showed a decrease in perceived insecurity compared to December 2023. San Pedro recorded the largest drop at 50.88%, followed by Apodaca with a decrease of 23.39%, Santa Catarina at 15.04%, Escobedo at 8.41%, and Guadalupe at 7.01%.
