In Nuevo León, forest fires have become a recurring issue, even before the arrival of summer. The director of Civil Protection of the entity, Erik Cavazos, pointed out that nearly 100 fires were recently recorded in different areas of the metropolitan zone.
Most of these incidents have taken place in vacant lots, which has raised concerns among the authorities. Cavazos emphasized the importance of keeping these spaces free of trash, cleared, and creating firebreaks to prevent the spread of fire. In addition, he reminded that there are prohibitions and possible penalties, even criminal ones, related to waste burning.
Among the recommendations issued by Civil Protection are to avoid throwing trash in vacant lots, not to make deliberate burns, keep these spaces clean, and to monitor any suspicious activity. Cavazos mentioned that it is essential to prevent fires before they ignite, especially given the climatic conditions favorable for the spread of fire.
The official explained that the combination of high temperature, wind, and low relative humidity favors the rapid expansion of fires in grasslands and cleared areas. This formula, known as 30-30-30, indicates that when these factors align (30 degrees Celsius of temperature, winds of 30 km/h, and humidity equal to or less than 30%), there is a high risk of fires in the area.
In light of this situation, the population is urged to collaborate in fire prevention by adopting measures of care and respect for the natural environment. Authorities will continue to be vigilant and work on identifying and sanctioning those responsible for negligently and intentionally causing these fires that endanger not only vegetation but also the lives of people and the biodiversity of the ecosystem.
