The Secretary of the Environment has resumed the issue of the Cadereyta Refinery after months of silence, appointing a team of experts to inspect the plant. This team includes Armandina Valdez from the State Air Quality Agency, Gerardo Mejía from TEC de Monterrey, and Alberto Cruzado from the State Government, as well as staff from Pemex. Javier González Alcántara, Deputy Secretary of the Environment, emphasized the importance of reporting on progress in this matter due to its relevance for the population.
González Alcántara mentioned that the experts recently accepted their position and will be responsible for studying and inspecting the Cadereyta Refinery. The reason for the previous legal action was to reduce emissions from the refinery, for which areas of opportunity must be identified, such as modernization and determining the necessary investment. The next step will be to work on obtaining the necessary resources.
Additionally, inspection tours were carried out in several neighborhoods of municipalities in the Monterrey metropolitan area in response to reports of gas odors. In a previous incident on January 20, residents of these municipalities suffered discomfort such as vomiting, nausea, and dizziness due to these odors. Civil Protection of Nuevo León received multiple reports and conducted inspections, confirming that the odors were coming from the Cadereyta refinery.
