The Environmental Secretariat of Nuevo León has activated a contingency due to the presence of high concentrations of particles smaller than 10 micrometers in the air, generated by winds and dust storms associated with cold front number 31. Air quality has become extremely poor in some areas, leading to the adoption of special measures in various sectors.
Alfonso Martínez, Secretary of the Environment, warned about the arrival of "fugitive dust" in the metropolitan area of Monterrey and shared a video showing the large number of particles in the environment. This phenomenon is due to natural causes, and the State Government is closely monitoring the situation.
Actions to reduce the presence of PM10 particles include measures for federal, state, and municipal competitive companies. Companies are urged to use anti-pollution equipment, wet work areas, reduce outdoor activities, and minimize emissions. Specifically, guidelines have been established for the Cadereyta Refinery and food processing establishments, among other sectors.
The general population should also take precautions, avoiding outdoor activities, especially sensitive groups such as children, the elderly, pregnant women, and individuals with respiratory and cardiovascular conditions. It is recommended to keep vehicles in good condition, avoid burning materials outdoors, and seek medical attention in case of respiratory difficulties.
The contingency will remain in effect until air quality conditions improve, so it is crucial to follow the authorities' guidelines to protect public health and the environment.
