According to Sebastián Lorda, co-founder of Buno, in Nuevo León (NL) two out of every 10 adults suffer from sleep apnea, affecting approximately 19 percent of the population between 30 and 69 years. Obstructive sleep apnea is a condition that repeatedly interrupts breathing during nighttime rest. In NL, it is estimated that more than 665 thousand people could be living with sleep apnea, of which between 80 and 90 percent are undiagnosed.
Apnea, also known as snoring, consists of a pause or interruption of breathing during sleep. This condition impacts workplace productivity and public health. As a result of this issue, Sebastián Lorda and his partners founded Buno, a clinic and healthtech in Monterrey specialized in the treatment of sleep apnea.
Óscar González, another co-founder of Buno, highlighted that people with untreated apnea have a higher risk of heart attack, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, cognitive decline, and a decrease in life expectancy of up to 10 to 15 years. Furthermore, the work performance of those suffering from apnea can be 30 percent lower than that of a healthy person.
Emilio González, also a co-founder of the clinic, mentioned the importance of technology in their care model, allowing them to reach more people with clear information, facilitate diagnosis from home, provide remote follow-up, and maintain constant communication with patients. Without this technology, scaling a quality and patient-centered solution would not be viable.
