Monterrey Implements Stricter Sanctions for Environmental Violations

The Environmental Prosecutor's Office is in the process of establishing an exemplary sanction against a company but without wanting to reveal details, according to the head of the agency, Alfonso Martínez.

Martínez presented a summary of the actions carried out from April 21 to May 2, highlighting 28 inspection visits, four activity suspensions for pollution or lack of authorizations, seven inspections in support of the Prosecutor's Office, among other environmental monitoring tasks.

Additionally, progress on the Citizen Forests project was reported, with the planting of more than 686 thousand trees, mainly in mountainous areas of several municipalities.

On the other hand, after an acid water and ferrous oxide spill by Ternium in the La Talaverna stream, the company claims to have acted quickly in containment and remediation efforts. Although the precise environmental impact has not yet been determined, the Ministry of Environment plans to impose a sanction on the company.

Martínez noted that they are awaiting a detailed report from the steel company to ensure the complete remediation of the affected biodiversity. Samples are being taken to assess the impact on soil and water, and the corresponding sanctions will be defined, considering environmental laws and regulations.

In summary, the Environmental Prosecutor's Office seeks to ensure that the necessary measures are taken to repair the damage caused by the incident and is preparing to impose an exemplary sanction on the responsible company.
