Government of Nuevo León will sanction Ternium for spill

After the hazardous substance spill at Ternium, the State Government, through the Ministry of Environment, has declared that it will impose an exemplary sanction due to the impact of the incident. The head of the department, Alfonso Martínez Muñoz, emphasized the need to rely on the possibilities provided by the Environmental Law and its regulations to impose the maximum viable sanction.

Martínez Muñoz stated that the sanction must be exemplary due to the severity of the spill of hydrochloric acid, acidic water, and ferrous chloride. The Ministry of Environment is currently collecting samples through Agua y Drenaje de Monterrey to assess the impact on the soil and water caused by the spill. They are also conducting surveys and cleaning tasks in Arroyo la Talaverna to mitigate the negative effects.

The official reported that they are awaiting a detailed report from Ternium regarding the incident to ensure the complete remediation of the affected biodiversity. Martínez Muñoz highlighted that the sanctions will be defined according to what is legally and technically possible against the company, once all relevant data has been assessed.

In this context, they are collaborating with the National Water Commission and reviewing the applicable environmental regulations to take appropriate measures. The ultimate goal is to ensure compliance with environmental laws and to repair any damage caused by the spill of hazardous substances at Ternium.
