Revolutionary Robotic Surgery Transforming Healthcare in Monterrey

In Monterrey, robotic surgery is enhancing precision and recovery for patients, particularly in prostate cancer treatment. Experts emphasize its growing impact in urology.

In 2006, San José TecSalud Hospital became the national pioneer in incorporating robotic technology into its medical procedures. Dr. Mario Enrique Garza Guerra, a urology specialist at this hospital in Monterrey, highlights that this innovation has revolutionized surgical practice, particularly in performing radical prostatectomies for patients with prostate cancer, achieving outstanding results.

According to Dr. Garza Guerra, specific training for surgeons in using the robot, through simulators and structured programs, has enabled more precise operations, with fewer complications and shorter recovery times for patients with urological diseases. This advancement has been fundamental in improving the quality of life for patients after an intervention.

Currently, three hospitals in Monterrey have the Da Vinci surgical system: Zambrano Hellion Hospital, Ángeles Valle Oriente Hospital, and Muguerza High Specialty Hospital. Dr. Garza Guerra emphasizes that the use of this technology requires certification and rigorous training for medical teams to ensure its proper use and the best outcomes for patients.

The Da Vinci system is an advanced robot that offers superior control and precision compared to traditional surgery. It operates through a console from which the surgeon manipulates articulated instruments that replicate their movements, significantly improving access to anatomically complex areas and reducing physiological tremor.

Despite its technical complexity, the learning curve for the Da Vinci robot is faster than that of advanced laparoscopy, making it a promising tool for new generations of surgeons. Although the cost of this robot is around 2.5 million dollars, its use is spreading in Mexico, with Monterrey being the city that marked the beginning of robotic surgery in the country.
