Monterrey Prepares for Cold Front with Winter Plan

As Monterrey faces a significant drop in temperature this November, Civil Protection is ready with shelters and necessary supplies for the homeless. Ongoing prevention measures include adequate clothing and food for vulnerable populations.

Monterrey Prepares for Cold Front with Winter Plan

A thermal sensation of 8 or 9 degrees is expected despite an ambient temperature of 10 degrees in Monterrey, due to factors such as wind and humidity. Erik Cavazos, director of Civil Protection of Nuevo León, explained that the Carousel Operation is carried out both in the morning and in the afternoon, focusing on the homeless, who represent 95% of the population in this situation in the city.

Regarding preventive measures, it is recommended to dress appropriately when going out, consume foods rich in vitamins A and C, and avoid dangerous situations for children, such as excessive warmth while sleeping. Sudden temperature changes indoors can also affect health, so it is advised to maintain moderate heating, check gas heaters for leaks, and ensure adequate ventilation.

A temperature peak close to 30 degrees is expected, followed by a rapid drop to 7 degrees in less than 48 hours, indicating a significant decrease. Erik Cavazos described this episode as a "dry cold" that will be felt in the region.

Next week, maximum temperatures are projected to reach 31 degrees, an unusual figure for November, but this will significantly drop to 7 degrees with the arrival of cold front number 10. Cavazos emphasized the importance of preparation for this first significant cold climate of the year and highlighted that Civil Protection has the necessary inventory to face low temperatures.

As part of a winter plan, a joint effort has been coordinated with institutions such as the Red Cross, DIF, Police, Transit, and Sedena to prevent contingencies. With 48 cold fronts forecasted until May, the network of 164 municipal shelters capable of accommodating more than 22,000 people remains active. Additional spaces in churches, schools, and gyms have also been prepared in case of emergencies.

To assist the homeless during this adverse weather, hot drinks, blankets, food, and other essential supplies will be distributed. The Carousel Operation will be implemented when the thermal sensation reaches single-digit values to ensure the well-being of the most vulnerable community during this winter season.
