The Monterrey City Council unanimously approved the creation of a Comprehensive Migrant Care Center (CIAM) in response to the threat of mass deportations by the United States government. The main objective of this initiative is to guide and channel foreigners to understand their immigration status with authorities and ensure the respect of their rights and obligations, regardless of whether they have legal or illegal residency in the municipality.
The city secretary, César Garza Villarreal, highlighted that the CIAM will serve as an office for guidance and channeling to secure the rights of migrants, allowing them to access procedures such as naturalization, temporary or formal work permits, and political asylum. Additionally, it is expected to facilitate the stay of migrants in Monterrey by providing access to health services, education, and employment.
Within this framework, the city council has begun discussions with various specialized institutions such as the National Migration Institute, the Commission for the Care of Refugees (COMAR), and the State Human Rights Commission (CEDH). The CIAM is part of the federal strategy to provide assistance to national citizens and other repatriates, offering legal advice and consular support for their integration and well-being in Monterrey.
