Leadership Change Brewing for Opposition Party in Mexico

Opposition party leader in Mexico faces dismissal. A leadership change is brewing within the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) in Nuevo León. According to sources, the current state leader, José Luis Garza Ochoa, may soon resign from his position. This move is reportedly spearheaded by the mayor of Monterrey, Adrián de la Garza. The relationship between de la Garza and the state party leader is strained, particularly due to recent disagreements over the alliance between the PRI and the conservative National Action Party (PAN). De la Garza, who himself aspires to the governorship, supports this alliance. Arguments against Garza Ochoa include his poor relations with local PAN leaders and his federal-level criticism against the president's policies (the 4T), while PRI's main political rivals remain the local 'Citizen Movement' (MC) and Governor Samuel García. It is noted that all territorial and electoral work is being driven from the municipalities, unions, and individual structures, not from the state party headquarters. This has led to a negative party image and a decline in membership numbers. Most PRI members are confident in Garza Ochoa's eventual departure, with the main question being when it will happen. There is also uncertainty about where one of the main allies of the national party leader, Alejandro Moreno, will end up. The current secretary of the Monterrey city council, César Garza, is being considered as the most likely replacement. This change could cause key shifts in the city's administration, with potential candidates like Rafael Ramos for the second-in-command role and the transfer of social programs to figures such as Ivonne Álvarez or Lorena de la Garza. It has been reported that the national party leader, Alejandro Moreno, has already been notified by various factions about the 'urgency' of a leadership change.
