Controversial Appointment of UNAM Official Raises Concerns

The appointment of Diana Tamara Martínez Ruiz as secretary of Institutional Development at UNAM has sparked outrage due to previous mismanagement and unresolved allegations of misconduct during her past leadership in Morelia.

Controversial Appointment of UNAM Official Raises Concerns

Doctor Diana Tamara Martínez Ruiz was hired by UNAM to serve as Secretary of Institutional Development, despite having a problematic track record in her previous management as director of the campus of the Maximum House of Studies in Morelia, Michoacán. During her time at that campus, anomalies amounting to several million pesos arose, related to improper contracts, incomplete inventories, and strikes due to allegations of sexual harassment.

Despite being responsible for the gender equity program at UNAM, Martínez Ruiz has failed to resolve the issues of aggression against women in the institution. Audits conducted revealed that she failed to maintain an organized internal office file and did not ensure IT and security coverage across the various campuses, despite a multimillion-dollar investment allocated for that purpose.

Additionally, the Secretary of Institutional Development has generated problems in UNAM's agreements with entities of the Republic for teacher training, which has led to the cancellation of courses and seminars, causing financial losses. Delays in payments to suppliers and academics have been detected since November 2024, without official explanation.

Despite the criticisms and calls for the resolution of the issues, both Dr. Martínez Ruiz and the rector of UNAM, Leonardo Lomelí Vanegas, have shown inability or disinterest in addressing the administrative irregularities. The inefficacy of the Secretary of Institutional Development has generated discontent among professors and academics at the university.

Meanwhile, at the executive level, the president of Banco Santander, Ana Botín, has made visits to Mexico as part of financial investments in the country. Despite announcements of investment and confidence in the Mexican economy, management and efficiency problems have been evident in the bank's digital subsidiary.
