Puebla Implements Public Transport Modernization Program

The Secretary of State Mobility and Transport, Silvia Tanús Osorio, announced that more than 190 transporters have registered in the Comprehensive Program for the Reorganization and Modernization of Public Transport in Puebla. During the program presentation, Tanús Osorio highlighted that the registered concessionaires meet the requirements, such as exceeding the 10 years of useful life of their buses.

The head of the SMT mentioned that the entity will verify each case to ensure that transporters can access direct support of 20% for the down payment of new units. According to official data, more than 40% of the 14,483 registered units in the state can be considered obsolete, totaling 5,793 vehicles.

It was clarified that it is not mandatory to acquire electric buses, but it will be required that the new units be of recent models. The SMT has conducted informational visits in several municipalities to inform about the program details, including locations such as Xicotepec, Huauchinango, and San Martín Texmelucan.

Tanús Osorio emphasized that the process of reorganizing public transport has not been easy, as many transporters consider the concessions to be their property. Nonetheless, it was reiterated that communication channels will remain open for those who wish to operate within the law and provide dignified service to the population.

The official also mentioned that the state government provides support to the sector, such as financing through Nacional Financiera of up to 250 million pesos, as well as subsidies for the down payments of new units, ranging from 10% for diesel buses to 16.75% for electric units.

Finally, it was revealed that the Puebla government is exploring the implementation of bank card payment on RUTA lines to facilitate transactions and ensure that the revenues reach the concessionaires intact. Tanús Osorio highlighted the importance of this initiative and the potential positive impact it would have on public transport in the region.
