Closure of San Pedro Cholula Landfill Causes Environmental Shift

The Secretary of the Environment of the state of Puebla is evaluating the construction of Waste Transformation Centers on four plots located in the municipalities of Tepeaca, Tecamachalco, and Tehuacán. The head of the agency, Rebeca Baños Guadarrama, has stated that it is essential to ensure that these centers do not become landfills.

In an interview, Baños Guadarrama explained that the closure of the landfill in Cholula is being expedited, as it has significantly exceeded its capacity. The concessionary company has already presented a closure plan that is being reviewed by Profepa.

Improper management of landfills can have serious environmental repercussions and, in this case, led to the mass dismissal of workers. More than 20 clandestine dumping sites have been reported as a consequence of the closure of the Cholula landfill.

The Secretary of the Environment mentioned that they will work with between 40 and 60 municipal markets to ensure that the waste generated does not end up in inappropriate places, promoting a circular economy approach and recycling of both organic and inorganic materials.

Although a date for the relocation of the waste generated by the 21 municipalities that sent their garbage to the Cholula landfill has not yet been defined, an agreement has been established with the Chiltepeque landfill in Puebla for temporary management.

On the other hand, Baños Guadarrama assured that there is no risk of saturation at the landfill in the capital, but preventive measures are being taken to establish transformation centers in coordination with other municipalities to avoid an environmental emergency.

On August 21, the San Pedro Cholula landfill was closed for exceeding its capacity by 1800%, which created the need to find new solutions for waste management in the region. Once the closure plan is approved, total closure of the site will proceed.
