According to the state Secretary of Health, there are currently 62 minors under the age of 15 in the state suffering from diabetes. The head of the agency, Araceli Soria Córdova, highlighted that the detection of this disease in the population is occurring at increasingly younger ages, but only 46% of the cases are under control. In terms of statistical data, Puebla ranks 19th nationally in cases of childhood diabetes.
"It is essential for the patient to actively participate in the management of their diabetes to prevent complications," said Araceli Soria Córdova. It is estimated that there are around 600,000 people with diagnosed diabetes in the state, but only a small percentage are enrolled in the IMSS' Diabetes Care Centers (CADIMSS).
In Puebla, the IMSS cares for between 50,000 and 55,000 minors with childhood and adolescent diabetes, according to Dr. José Israel López Ramírez. Since the beginning of the administration, 228,500 glucose tests have been conducted, and 33.3% have returned positive results in people over 45 years old. The strategy aims to identify cases of diabetes early and prevent long-term complications.
During a press conference, the head of service at the IMSS Clinic 1 emphasized that many children and adolescents diagnosed with diabetes are unaware of their condition until symptoms become evident. The doctor stressed that diabetes is a process that develops over several years, and it is crucial to detect it before symptoms appear.
The IMSS also conducts annual detection tests for people over 20 years old, even in those who do not yet show symptoms of the disease. In this regard, the goal is to raise awareness among the population about the importance of prevention and active management of diabetes to avoid long-term complications.
