A documentary about Cecilia Monzón, a murdered lawyer and activist, is now available worldwide. The piece highlights the struggle of many families in Mexico to ensure that the femicides of their loved ones are not forgotten. The documentary denounces the delays in the judicial process of Monzón's femicide case and examines the obstacles faced by her family.
It was presented on Spanish television in the program "En Portada" by RTVE and will be launched on YouTube starting this Wednesday. The audiovisual work narrates Monzón's life and her tireless defense of women's rights, as well as the legal difficulties that have hindered her family's access to justice.
The documentary highlights Monzón's ex-partner, Javier López Zavala, a former candidate for the governorship of Puebla, who is identified as the mastermind behind her femicide. However, it also criticizes the Puebla judicial system for the slowness in imposing the maximum sentence against the accused.
The plot focuses on Helena Monzón, Cecilia's sister, who has led an intense legal campaign in Mexico since May 2022 to ensure that the crime does not go unpunished. Her testimony reveals the numerous obstacles and the slow progress of the judicial system in cases of gender violence and femicide, showing the struggle of those seeking justice for their loved ones in Mexico.
Presented by Lorenzo Milá and directed by Teresa Martín, the documentary has a duration of nearly 42 minutes and includes the participation of Rosa Alcántara as deputy director, Xaquín López as screenwriter, and Cristina Moreno in production.
