The Secretary of Public Education (SEP) in Mexico reported the alleged case of usurpation of profession by Marilyn Cote, accused of illegally practicing psychiatry without holding the proper professional license. It was verified that there was no license related to psychiatry or any other area of health in the National Registry of Professionals, which constitutes a violation of the laws regulating professions in the country.
The complaint filed aims to determine the corresponding legal responsibilities and, if necessary, establish the possible criminal consequences for the usurpation of a regulated profession. This situation risks people's health and undermines trust in the professional health system, highlighted EurÃpides Flores, head of the Legal Affairs Unit of the SEP.
Flores called on the public to be more cautious when seeking medical attention and to verify the credentials of the professionals treating them. He recommended using the public platform of the National Registry of Professionals to check if a specialist is duly registered and authorized to practice.
The complaint originated after it was confirmed that Marilyn Cote was issuing prescriptions for controlled medications despite lacking the required studies and certification. This fact was detected by the authorities, prompting the investigation initiated by the SEP at the request of President Claudia Sheinbaum and SEP head Mario Delgado Carrillo.
In this context, the SEP has taken legal measures to clarify this case of illegal practice of psychiatry, emphasizing the importance of respecting the regulations that govern professions in the country and protecting the health of citizens.
