Transporters in Puebla protested on Monday by blocking one of the lanes of the Atlixcáyotl road, demanding an increase in public transport fares. The demonstrators, numbering fewer than 50 drivers from routes in the capital, Cholula, and Atlixco, expressed their discontent over the lack of response to their demands.
Among the transporters' complaints is the lack of fare updates, pointing out that the last increase occurred in 2019. In that year, the fare rose from 6 to 8 pesos, an increase they consider insufficient to cover their expenses. Some transporters indicated that they are forced to sell personal items, like socks, to survive the crisis facing the sector.
The protesters emphasized that they have been participating in working groups for more than a year without receiving positive responses to their demands. They criticized that in Puebla, the transport fare is one of the lowest nationwide and suggested the need for the ticket price to be adjusted to a minimum of 14 pesos, even proposing an increase to 19 pesos on certain routes.
In response to the protest, the Ministry of the Interior announced that a dialogue table will be set up next Wednesday, October 30, following instructions from Governor Sergio Céspedes Peregrina. The transporters are demanding equitable treatment compared to the RUTA system, requesting similar subsidies and improvements in infrastructure for public transport.
