Sheinbaum Defends Mexican Rights Amid Trump Administration

The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, highlighted the importance of Mexicans for the economy of the United States and the country, announcing the defense of compatriots abroad in the face of the new Administration of Donald Trump. In a message in Puebla, Sheinbaum mentioned that in 2024 Mexican migrants sent a record amount of 65 billion dollars in remittances, significantly contributing to the national GDP.

She emphasized that remittances sent from the United States represent only 20% of the earnings of Mexicans there, underlining the hard work of the Mexican people. She acknowledged the contribution of migrants to the economies of both the United States and Mexico, especially in sectors such as agriculture, construction, and services, countering the threats of mass deportations.

Sheinbaum highlighted the work of Mexicans in American agriculture, noting that eight out of ten workers in the field are of Mexican origin, which reveals their vital importance in supplying food in the neighboring country. She announced that the protection of migrants' rights would be strengthened through an increase in lawyers at Mexican consulates to assist those who decide to return to Mexico.

The leader reiterated the willingness to welcome back Mexicans who choose to return to the country, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a constructive and beneficial relationship with the United States. Additionally, she underscored her Government's determination to defend national sovereignty and the values of Mexicans in a context of new dynamics in bilateral relations, making a call for dialogue to achieve a positive understanding, while making it clear that Mexico is a free, independent, and sovereign country.
