As of January 24, an agreement from the Institute of Social Security and Services for State Workers (ISSSTE) came into effect, guaranteeing access to the Legal Pregnancy Interruption procedure in its medical units. However, this agreement cannot be applied in Querétaro, as reported by the state delegate of ISSSTE, Christian Orihuela Gómez.
This is because Querétaro is not part of the national health system, and the agreement establishes that it can only be applied in entities where legal interruption of pregnancy has been approved. Despite this limitation, the goal is to provide timely, comprehensive, and quality care to users, always seeking their physical, psychological, and social well-being, in accordance with current legal provisions.
The Legal Pregnancy Interruption procedure can only be carried out when the decision is free and informed, and medical personnel must inform about risks, alternatives, side effects, and provide therapeutic support. Although this service is not available in medical units in Querétaro, Orihuela Gómez mentioned that a federal resource has been submitted in order to enable it in the entity within 8 to 10 months.
Meanwhile, female beneficiaries from Querétaro can go to nearby entities such as Mexico City, Estado de México, and San Luis Potosí to request this procedure. In the state, there are 183,000 beneficiaries, with 53% being women. It is expected that the issue will continue to evolve and gradually progress throughout the country.
It is important to note that the Institute must have a list of clinics in the states where this service will be provided and that each unit must have non-conscientious objection personnel to perform it.
