Mexico Prepares for Challenges with Trump's Return

With the arrival of Donald Trump to the presidency of the United States, Mexico faces new challenges, according to the president of the National Chamber of Small Commerce in Querétaro (CANACOPE QUERETARO), Eduardo Chávez Hidalgo. He highlighted the importance of joint collaboration between the government and the private sector, as the economy plays a crucial role despite political differences. Chávez Hidalgo emphasized the need for the Government of Mexico to clearly establish its position and prepare for possible exchanges with the United States in the future.

Regarding the mass deportations announced by Trump, which would primarily affect Mexico, citizens and authorities at the northern border of the country have expressed concern. In this context, the city of Tijuana issued a state of emergency due to the possibility of mass deportation. The head of Government of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum, promised a plan to welcome the repatriated individuals, offering them jobs and social programs. On the other hand, a discrepancy has been pointed out between the perception of the leader and the reality in the border states.

In terms of security, Trump has mentioned the possibility of intervening in Mexico through bombings of criminal groups or the use of U.S. troops. There has also been a proposal to declare Mexican cartels as terrorists, a suggestion deemed appropriate by some political figures close to the president-elect. In light of this scenario, Sheinbaum trusts that effective coordination can be achieved to address the challenges, highlighting the importance of being prepared as a country.

On the other hand, a significant impact on the Mexican economy is expected, given that 83% of the country's exports are directed to the United States. Trump has threatened to impose tariffs on Mexican products, which could affect economic growth and generate uncertainty in the country. Despite these challenges, Sheinbaum's firm stance against Trump's trade threats is highlighted, expressing willingness to respond equivalently if tariff measures are implemented. Experts emphasize the need to unify efforts to develop strategies that boost job opportunities, reinforce security in supply chains, and contribute to reducing inequalities in the country.
