Construction of Mexico-Querétaro Train Project Begins

The Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT) awarded the first tender for the Mexico-Querétaro train to the company Cal y Mayor Asociados S.C. for conducting studies related to demand, social and urban impact, and the legal and economic conditions of the project.

The service will include the characterization of demand, social impact, and cost-benefit evaluation, as established in the call for bids. Cal y Mayor Asociados S.C., a company with experience in strategic transportation projects at the federal level, such as the second section of the Maya Train, Line 3 of the Guadalajara electric train, and the extension of Line 12 of the Mexico City Metro, will be responsible for these studies.

The Mexico-Querétaro train, which will require an investment of approximately 75 billion pesos, is scheduled to begin construction in April of this year, with the goal of becoming operational in 2029. The winning company of the tender started studies on January 20 along the project's 225 kilometers, with the expectation of completing them by April, coinciding with the start of train construction.

Among the objectives of the studies are to gather information on the supply and demand for travel in the area, identify interests, resources, and potential conflicts among the involved parties, as well as assess the financial feasibility of the project. The Mexico City-Querétaro Train project will consist of 225 kilometers of tracks, trains with a capacity for 450 passengers, and three main stations in Querétaro capital, San Juan del Río, and Buenavista in Mexico City.

Additionally, the construction of secondary stations is planned, including one at the Querétaro International Airport. The governor of Querétaro, Mauricio Kuri, revealed that President Claudia Sheinbaum will announce the exact locations of the stations during her scheduled visit on February 5.
