New Train Project in Querétaro Set to Transform Transport

A mega construction project for the Mexico-Querétaro train, which crosses 21 municipalities and localities, including 5 from the state of Querétaro, is being planned. The Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transport has prepared a document detailing that the project will cover a total length of 230.34 kilometers, with double tracks for passenger trains and freight trains.

The Querétaro train is projected to be located near the Peña Colorada Protected Natural Area, while three others would be close to the Tula National Park, the Vega de Madero Ecological Preservation Zone, and the Sierra de Guadalupe-La Armella State Park, in Tlalnepantla, State of Mexico. Additionally, the construction and rehabilitation of 49 bridges, 6 tunnels, 14 viaducts, 197 vehicular crossings, 42 pedestrian crossings and 200 drainage works are included in the project.

The infrastructure will include stations in Querétaro, Tula (Hidalgo), and Buenavista (Mexico City), as well as the construction of wildlife crossings under the railway tracks. It is estimated that the trains will share sections among themselves and with the Suburban Train of the Valley of Mexico during the journey.

The passenger trains will be hybrid diesel-electric, traveling at 160 km/h with a maximum load of 19 tons, and the trip is estimated to take one hour and fifty minutes. On the other hand, freight trains will travel at 85 km/h and can carry up to 32.5 tons.

Regarding the investment, it is preliminarily calculated at 144 billion 99 million pesos, 92% more than initially projected. The construction of the train is scheduled to begin in April, with the expectation of becoming operational between 2027 and 2029, having a minimum useful life of 50 years.
