Charges Dropped Against 14-Year-Old in Controversial Case

The Attorney General's Office of the state of Querétaro dropped the charges against the 14-year-old girl who was accused of homicide, after activists defended that it was an abortion. The Secretary of Women, Citlalli Hernández, accompanied by prosecutor Víctor Antonio de Jesús Hernández, reported this decision. Through social media, it was explained that an investigation will be opened in the Internal Control Body to review whether the officials who followed up on the case engaged in actions contrary to the law.

The secretary emphasized that this case sets a precedent for justice, equality, and the prevention of violence against girls and women in Mexico. The importance of establishing communication with different federal and state bodies was highlighted to provide comprehensive attention and support to the minor, ensuring reparation and preventing the recurrence of such cases.

In a call to local legislators, they were urged to legislate to decriminalize abortion and avoid the criminalization of women for personal decisions or spontaneous acts. The attorney general thanked the support from the secretary's office and assured that training for the agency's staff in gender perspective would be guaranteed, prioritizing individual rights and protection in similar situations.

This case sparked mobilization from various groups in the country, as well as positions from courts affirming the need to judge with a child perspective and prioritize the best interest of the child. The intervention of the president of the republic, Claudia Sheinbaum, and statements from the Senate also arose as a result of this event.
