IEEQ Faces Budget Challenges for Judicial Elections

The Electoral Institute of the State of Querétaro (IEEQ) does not have a budget to organize a possible election of judges and magistrates in the state, according to the president counselor Grisel Muñiz. This situation arises amid the analysis of holding elections for judges and magistrates this year or in 2027.

Muñiz explained that the budget for the year 2025 did not contemplate this possible election because it is not yet regulated in the state, so the electoral body is closely following the decisions made by the authorities on this issue. The budget approved by the Electoral Institute of the State of Querétaro did not include anything related to judicial reform, as it is still not regulated at the local level.

The president counselor pointed out that although the deadline to harmonize the federal reform expires on March 14, there are also dates and indications from the National Electoral Institute that must be taken into account in these legislative changes. In light of this situation, the need to act in accordance with updated information received was emphasized.

In the event that the election takes place in 2027, Grisel Muñiz mentioned that there would be two distinct electoral processes: the judicial election and the local electoral process, which includes the election of governor, local legislators, and the 18 municipalities. Therefore, the budget must consider these aspects for its proper organization.

The local Electoral Institute has an authorized budget of 232 million 146 thousand 690 pesos for the year 2025. Of that amount, 60% is allocated to the financing of political parties, while the remaining 40% corresponds to ordinary expenses.

Recently, an agreement was issued for this reform to be reviewed in the joint commissions of Administration and Justice Procurement, as well as Constitutional Points. It is estimated that forums for socialization and listening will be held in February to issue a report on this issue, with Guillermo Vega as the president of the work and Homero Barrera as secretary.
