Claudia Sheinbaum Excludes SCJN Chief from Constitution Event

President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that the representative of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation, Norma Piña, would not be invited to the Commemoration of the Constitution in Querétaro, an event that celebrates the promulgation of the Mexican Constitution in 1917. This decision was made due to prior actions in which Norma Piña displayed a stance contrary to representatives of Morena in the Executive Branch.

On February 6, 2023, Norma Piña did not stand up when former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador entered the Theater of the Republic, breaking the established protocol. In addition, she led protests from Judicial Branch workers against reforms implemented under the presidency of Claudia Sheinbaum.

In one of her statements, the president emphasized that the Court must respect both the Executive and Legislative branches, and lamented the absence of the Judicial Branch at a recent event. The decision not to invite Norma Piña to the anniversary of the Constitution was communicated by Sheinbaum at a press conference.

Sheinbaum reiterated that this is a republican act and that, while they are respectful, they also demand respect from other institutions. The absence of the Court at this event, which generated controversy on social media, reflects a tense atmosphere between the branches of government in Mexico.
