Increase in Police Violence in Mexico

In Mexico, 79 police officers have been murdered in 2024, with the latest victim found burned in Rosamorada, Nayarit. Reports indicate a disturbing trend of violence against law enforcement throughout the country.


Increase in Police Violence in Mexico

So far this year, 79 police officers have been reported murdered in Mexico, with the most recent case reported in Nayarit, where a police officer from the Ministry of Mobility was found burned in the municipality of Rosamorada. Data from the association Causa en Común A.C. indicates that 78 police officers have been killed in Mexico, with 8 homicides of this kind occurring in the week from February 21 to 27. Among them are the police officers found dead in Teocaltiche, Jalisco.

Causa Común's estimate reveals that, on average, one police officer is murdered per day in Mexico. During 2024, at least 320 police officers were killed in the country, with Guanajuato recording 61 cases, followed by the State of Mexico with 24, Guerrero with 22, and Chiapas with 20. Other states with significant numbers included Michoacán (17), Nuevo León (16), Tamaulipas (16), Sinaloa (16), Baja California (13), and Puebla (13).

It was also highlighted that from October 1, 2024, to February 28, 2025, at least 172 police officers have been recorded as murdered in Mexico, data collected from journalistic and institutional reports.

The Attorney General's Office of the State of Nayarit confirmed that the burned body found in the municipality of Rosamorada belonged to the active police officer from the Ministry of Mobility, Luis Antonio "N", who was reported missing. The agent was last seen after a high-speed chase of a truck. It was also reported about the execution of a farmer who witnessed the murder of the police officer.

The death of the SEMOVI Nayarit agent is the first of the year in the entity, although in 2024, the homicide of state police officer Arturo "N" was recorded on December 1 in Huajicori, at the hands of armed civilians.
