The Government of Mexico has just inaugurated a temporary shelter in Tijuana to receive migrants deported from the United States under the restrictive measures of Donald Trump. This shelter, located in the Flamingos commercial plaza, about 15 kilometers from the San Ysidro border crossing, will provide comprehensive care to repatriated Mexicans.
Mónica Vega, Secretary of Environment of Baja California, in charge of coordinating the shelter, reported that it will be equipped with medical and psychological services. Additionally, it will be part of the National Employment System and will have an office of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) to provide medical services to repatriates.
The place has been certified with security measures and will be guarded by the National Guard and the Mexican Army. Strategically located near the El Chaparral border crossing, the shelter aims to ensure warm and humane care for migrants, also offering privacy and dignity.
This shelter is the first of nine announced by the president and aims to address the specific needs of deported migrants. The establishment of this space responds to previous experiences, such as the arrival of the Migrant Caravan in 2018.
Days after the opening of this shelter, the Government also presented the 'Mexico Embraces You' strategy, which seeks the reintegration of deported Mexicans with promises of employment, social programs, transportation support throughout the country, and a card of 2,000 pesos.
