The Tijuana Fire Department had to face more than 200 fires in less than a week, prompting the declaration of a "state of alarm" due to adverse weather conditions. One of the most significant fires occurred in the Leandro Valle neighborhood, raising concern among local authorities.
José Luis Jiménez, director of Civil Protection, communicated in a video on the Tijuana City Council's Facebook page the alarming number of fires affecting residents and air quality in the region. According to reports, between January 20 and January 24, 248 such incidents were recorded in the city.
Reported damages include 94 affected homes, the evacuation of more than 300 people, and the unfortunate loss of two lives. In light of this situation, Tijuana's mayor, Ismael Burgueño, officially recognized the "state of alarm" in the area and expressed his support for the affected families.
The valuable work of the Fire Department was highlighted, particularly that of Captain Luis Martínez and the on-duty chief, Captain Arturo Sánchez, for their heroic efforts in rescuing a baby during one of the incidents. It was emphasized that the condition of strong winds and dry environment has been decisive in the spread of the fires.
The Altiplano, Leandro Valle, and Solidaridad Xochimilco neighborhoods were some of the most affected areas, where firefighters provided support and assistance. Amid the crisis, a video was circulated showing a suspected individual responsible for starting one of the fires, provoking outrage in the community.
