Aburto Continues in Prison Following Legal Decision

The First Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation decided that Mario Aburto Martínez will remain in prison while the procedure he seeks to overturn his 45-year prison sentence is reviewed and obtain a new ruling based on the criminal regulations of Baja California in 1994, the year he murdered Luis Donaldo Colosio, the PRI presidential candidate.

Colosio was assassinated on March 23, 1994, in Tijuana after a speech in the Lomas Taurinas neighborhood. Aburto Martínez, his confessed killer, managed to evade security and shot him in the head, after which he has remained incarcerated in a maximum-security prison.

Recently, the Attorney General's Office revealed the identity of Jorge Antonio 'S' as the second shooter related to Colosio's homicide, who also served as the operational deputy director of the Center for Investigation and National Security (CISEN), being considered close to Genaro García Luna. According to the information revealed, Jorge 'S' was present at the assassination event with a reporter's credential.

Regarding Mario Aburto, on the day of the attack, he was seen helping Colosio after the shot, getting his shirt bloodied. Despite being interrogated and exonerated by the Attorney General's Office at the time, he was later assigned to CISEN in Sinaloa where he performed administrative duties.
