The government of President Claudia Sheinbaum has confirmed the death of Carlos Alberto Manzo Rodríguez, the mayor of Uruapan, who was known for his confrontational approach to combating organized crime. The assassination took place during the "Festival of the Candles" celebration, held annually to commemorate the Day of the Dead. The mayor was shot multiple times and died at the scene. Councilor Víctor Hugo de la Cruz Saucedo, nicknamed "El Saladitas," and one of the mayor's bodyguards, a member of the Civil Guard, were also seriously injured. The attackers, who were armed, fled the scene. One of them was killed at the scene, and another was captured. The federal government has stated that this crime will not go unpunished. Manzo, who took office as an independent candidate, had recently requested federal authorities to reinforce the security presence with National Guard and Army elements due to rising crime in the region.
