In Mexico, in the state of Michoacán, the mayor of Uruapan, Carlos Manzo Rodríguez, was assassinated. The attack occurred on Saturday evening, around 20:10, following a public event in the main square. The mayor was taking photos with children when two unknown individuals opened fire. As a result of the attack, councilman Víctor Hugo de la Cruz Saucedo, known as 'El Saladitas,' and the mayor's bodyguard, a member of the Civil Guard, were also wounded. The victims are in critical condition. The mayor died at the Fray Juan de San Miguel hospital at 20:50. One of the attackers was killed at the scene, and a 9mm handgun and seven shell casings were seized. The deceased had no identification, and his identity is being established. Carlos Alberto Manzo Rodríguez assumed the mayorship of Uruapan in 2024, winning the local elections as an independent candidate from the 'Los del Sombrero' movement. He had repeatedly expressed concerns for his life due to the increasing violence from organized crime groups and had requested support from the federal government.
