Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has strongly condemned the murder of Uruapan Mayor Carlos Manzo Rodríguez, which occurred on the evening of November 1st in Michoacán, and stated that her government will reinforce its security strategy and ensure impunity is not tolerated in this case.
“I condemn with absolute firmness the vile murder of the municipal president of Uruapan, Carlos Manzo,” the head of state said in a message shared on social networks. Sheinbaum expressed her most sincere condolences to his family and loved ones, as well as to the people of Uruapan over this irreparable loss.
The president reported that upon learning of the crime, she immediately spoke with the governor of Michoacán, Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla, and with the Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, Omar García Harfuch, who, she said, has maintained constant communication with the state prosecutor, Carlos Torres Piña, to coordinate the investigation's actions.
The head of the Executive branch also announced that she has convened the Security Cabinet “to guarantee support for Michoacán and to ensure there is no impunity.”
She noted that the territorial commands of the Ministry of National Defense and the National Guard were in communication with the mayor and that he “had federal protection.”
Sheinbaum added that the Security Cabinet will hold a press conference in the coming hours “to transparently inform on the progress in the investigation of this case.”
The president recalled that her Administration has reinforced the National Security Strategy, but acknowledged that events like the mayor's murder “prompt us to strengthen it even more.”
“We reaffirm our commitment to putting all the efforts of the State into achieving peace and security with zero impunity and justice,” she emphasized.
The head of state's stance joins that of Governor Ramírez Bedolla, who also “energetically” condemned the “cowardly attack” that claimed Manzo's life and assured that the state Public Security Secretariat and the National Guard are coordinating surveillance and supervision actions.
Who was Carlos Manzo?
Carlos Manzo won the mayoralty of Uruapan in the 2024 electoral process as an independent candidate, after having served as a federal deputy from 2021 to 2024 under the banner of the ruling National Regeneration Movement (Morena), from which he distanced himself to launch his independent political campaign with the slogan “the man in the hat.”
Throughout 2025, Manzo raised his voice on several occasions to demand federal support from Sheinbaum to confront organized crime operating in Uruapan. The mayor even announced rewards for municipal police who would take down hitmen.
