Mexico President Announces 'Michoacán Plan for Peace and Justice'

During her Tuesday morning press conference, President Claudia Sheinbaum announced the "Michoacán Plan for Peace and Justice," an "integral strategy" focused mainly on addressing the state's violence crisis.

"Our commitment is to get to the truth and achieve justice in the cowardly murder of Carlos Manzo," stated the head of state.

The announcement comes after the murder of Uruapan's mayor, Carlos Manzo, which occurred last Saturday, November 1st.

"Michoacán is a state with history, strength, and dignity. His cowardly murder (of Carlos Manzo) hurts not only his family and community, but all of Michoacán and the country," said Sheinbaum.

The president detailed that the plan contemplates three axes. The first, focused on security and justice, will involve strengthening federal and local forces, along with the creation of a specialized prosecutor's office for high-impact crimes and biweekly security tables with the federal cabinet.

Secondly, it refers to economic development with justice, which will include social security and dignified wages for day laborers, investment in rural infrastructure, and agreements with the productive sector.

Finally, the axis focused on education and culture for peace, with school, sports, and artistic programs.

"We are going to recover tranquility with justice, to take care of our communities, and to demonstrate that peace can be built from below, with dignity and with hope," Sheinbaum stated.

Sheinbaum indicated that her cabinet will meet this week with community representatives, traditional authorities, churches, and productive sectors to refine the plan's content, which will be presented "at the end of this week or the beginning of the next."

"Peace is not imposed with force, it is built with people, with communities, and with the daily work of those who love their land," she concluded.
