This afternoon, Grecia Itzel Quiroz García will assume the mayorship of Uruapan. The ceremony will take place around 2:30 PM at the State Congress in Morelia, where she will succeed her husband, Carlos Alberto Manzo Rodríguez, who was assassinated on November 1st during the Day of the Dead celebrations.
With this ascension, Quiroz will become the second woman in the municipality's history to hold the mayorship, after PAN's Mary Dóddoli, who governed on three occasions between 1995 and 2010.
According to information from her social media, Grecia Quiroz was born on January 16, 1990, in Uruapan, Michoacán. She completed her basic education at Colegio La Paz and earned her bachelor's degree in Political Science from the Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz University in 2016.
According to regional press reports, her foray into politics began in 2021 when she joined her husband's team during his term as federal deputy for Uruapan's District 9 with the MORENA party. She participated in tours, meetings with authorities, and encounters with civil society.
In December 2023, she registered as an independent candidate for local deputy for Uruapan's District 20, but on January 20, 2024, she withdrew her candidacy to consolidate the "Sombrero Movement," the civic platform created by Manzo that led him to the mayorship as an independent candidate. Grecia participated in the collection of signatures and in all stages of Carlos Manzo's electoral campaign.
Following Manzo's victory and their marriage, Grecia was named honorary president of DIF Uruapan, where she promoted social programs, which reinforced her presence in public life and her connection with the citizens.
The "Sombrero Movement," also known as "La Sombreriza," seeks to give residents a direct voice in municipal decision-making and represents an alternative to the control of traditional parties. The hat worn by Manzo became a symbol of closeness and civic participation.
After her husband's assassination, Grecia Quiroz has reiterated that she will continue with the vision and projects promoted by Manzo, stating that the movement's work and her husband's legacy will not be halted.
The proposal for Grecia Quiroz as her successor arose within the Sombrero Movement and was presented by independent deputy Carlos Alejandro Bautista Tafolla to the 76th Legislature of the State Congress.
Quiroz García will take office in a context of high political tension and insecurity, while investigations into her husband's homicide continue.
It is worth noting that the day before, Grecia Quiroz met with the President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, at the National Palace, and details of that meeting are unknown.
Grecia Quiroz has called for peace during demonstrations over her husband's assassination and has committed to continuing his legacy. It is expected that this afternoon she will announce her first measures, including actions on security.
