After taking office as the Municipal President of Uruapan before the Congress of the State of Michoacán as the substitute for Carlos Manzo, Mayor Grecia Quiroz García warned that “the Independent Movement of the Hat is stronger than ever” and that the circumstances that led her to this position should not be happening. “They woke up the tiger that Carlos talked so much about,” she stated in a message on social media addressed to her supporters. Quiroz García pointed out that her husband, the late mayor, should have continued at the helm of the municipality. “I am taking a place that will be difficult to fill, because this should not be happening, because the one who should continue to govern our municipality is Carlos Manzo, the best president in the history of Mexico,” she expressed. After taking the oath of office in the Legislature in Morelia, the mayor returned to Uruapan under a security operation, led by federal forces, and remained sheltered at the facilities of the Movement of the Hat. In her statement, the new municipal president said she assumes the responsibility “with deep pain and a broken heart,” but with the commitment to uphold the municipality and continue fighting for the ideals of her movement. “Today I ask you to fight together because only then will we move our beautiful municipality forward,” she added in her text. At the end of her message, she asked for blessings for Uruapan and the deceased politician. “May God bless you and may God always bless Carlos Manzo for giving his life for what he loved most: his people.” Carlos Manzo, who won the 2024 municipal election, was assassinated on the first of November during the Festival of the Great Candles in the main square of Uruapan in the midst of a crowd celebrating the Day of the Dead. The Congress of Michoacán and the City Council of Uruapan approved the swearing-in of Quiroz García, amidst demonstrations and complaints from supporters of the Movement of the Hat. It is expected that this Thursday she will issue some public message as the second female mayor of the place.
