Sheinbaum: Security Requires Social Measures, Not Just Military

When questioned about the case of a 17-year-old accused of murdering the mayor of Uruapan, Carlos Manzo, President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed regret during her morning press conference on Friday and emphasized that the national security strategy must go beyond the deployment of armed forces, focusing on addressing social causes. Therefore, the security strategy is not just about the presence of forces, the strength of prosecutors, and arrests; it must have a focus on addressing the root causes. The head of state rejected the idea that the "hugs, not bullets" policy implies indulgence towards criminals and clarified that its goal is to provide opportunities for young people. "We need to embrace young people with education and sports, not allow crime to be a life option," Sheinbaum insisted. She emphasized that a social focus is key to preventing young people from being recruited by organized crime. "We have to do everything in our power to ensure that no young person gets close to a criminal group. That's why we are promoting the Michoacán Plan," she highlighted. From the National Palace, Sheinbaum announced that the Michoacán Plan will be presented this Friday and was developed in conjunction with the Secretary of the Interior, Rosa Icela Rodríguez, and other cabinet members. She recalled that it will include coordinated actions with municipal presidents, local sectors, and teachers to strengthen security, education, culture, and sports in the state. Sheinbaum sent a message of solidarity to the families of Michoacán, assuring them that "they are not alone" and that the federal government will maintain a constant presence in the state.
