Seven Mexican Mayor's Bodyguards Detained for Possible Complicity in His Murder

The Prosecutor's Office of the state of Michoacán (west) announced on Friday the detention of seven bodyguards for their 'probable' participation in the murder of the mayor of Uruapan, which occurred on November 1st during a public event for the Day of the Dead. In a social media post, the state Prosecutor's Office reported that the detention of these seven bodyguards is for the possible commission of a homicide by omission crime, and all of them will be made available to the Control Judge. According to local media, the detained workers were bodyguards for Carlos Manzo who provided him with personal security. The Prosecutor's Office indicated that this involves six men and one woman who were part of the Municipal Police and on the day of the attack were in the inner circle of Manzo Rodríguez's personal security during the Candle Lighting Festival that the mayor led as part of the Day of the Dead commemoration in the main plaza of Uruapan. The bodyguards were identified as Omar M., Alejandro F., Mario Alberto S., Guillermo T., Demetrio D., Osmar Oswaldo G., and Monserrat H., aged 47, 21, 45, 43, 44, 56, and 23 years old, respectively. The operation involved members of the Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC), the Secretary of Defense, and Mexican National Guard personnel. These detentions come on the same day that a suspected intellectual author of the crime, identified as Jorge Antonio 'N', alias 'El Licenciado', entered prison after being arrested last Wednesday, also in the state of Michoacán. 'El Licenciado' was taken to the maximum-security prison 'El Altiplano' in the State of Mexico (central part of the country). He is accused of being one of the intellectual authors of Manzo's murder, who was shot dead in a crime that has generated a wave of indignation throughout the country. Announcing the detention on Wednesday, the head of Mexico's SSPC, Omar García Harfuch, confirmed that Manzo's murder is linked to a criminal group in the area related to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG. According to the state Prosecutor's Office, investigations point to three men participating in the direct aggression: the subject who shot and was killed at the scene, and two others who carried out 'surveillance and logistics work,' who were found dead on November 10th. The material authors of the crime were identified as Víctor Manuel 'N', Fernando Josué 'N', and Ramiro 'N', respectively.
