Mexican Senator Calls Mayor a 'Fascist' Over Political Ambitions

Senator Gerardo Fernández Noroña called Uruapan's mayor, Grecia Quiroz, a 'fascist' with 'ambition' after she made statements suggesting she would run for governor of Michoacán. On Monday and Tuesday, Fernández Noroña criticized the widow of Carlos Manzo, who was killed during the 'Velas' festival in Uruapan, for demanding an investigation into the responsibility of politicians such as Leonel Godoy, Raúl Morón, and Ignacio Campos. In his YouTube video chats, Fernández Noroña said: 'The irresponsible statement by Mayor (Grecia) Quiroz in Uruapan, pointing to Godoy and Morón as possible culprits. She can go to the Prosecutor's Office and provide evidence if she has any, but the statement is clearly political, where her ambition has been awakened and she is going for the governorship of Michoacán. I'm signing this, she will be a candidate. From that to her beating us, there's a whole sea of difference...'. He added: '...And that the right will support her with all their might, because they need figures, fascists, who legitimize them and have a certain popular support, because the rest is just saliva...'. On Tuesday, he reaffirmed his statements from the Senate podium. Senator María de Jesús Díaz Marmolejo, from the PAN parliamentary group, called on the Secretary of Women, Citlali Hernández, not to evade the issue. She stated that Fernández Noroña's statements constitute gender-based political violence by attempting to minimize a woman's statements. She said that it cannot be normalized for a legislator to use their voice to silence and revictimize a woman. Senator Susana Zatarain, from the PAN, said that Fernández Noroña tried to diminish Grecia Quiroz. She demanded that the Secretary of Women, Citlali Hernández, make a statement on the matter.
