Grecia Quiroz, the mayor and widow of Carlos Manzo Rodríguez, paid a symbolic tribute to her husband last night at the place where he was killed on November 1st, at the Plaza de Los Mártires in Uruapan, Michoacán, on the first anniversary of this murder that shook much of the country. Grecia Quiroz García, who took her husband's place as mayor, attended a private mass at the temple of San Francisco to commemorate the first month of her partner's death. Then, visibly shaken, she placed a floral offering at the same place where she lost her life at the hands of a 17-year-old. During the religious ceremony, the mayor was flanked by councilman Víctor Hugo de la Cruz, who was also injured in the attack, and by Esteban Constantino, Secretary of Public Works, who was at the scene on the day of the attack. Grecia Quiroz was guarded at all times by elements of the National Guard. After a few minutes, she placed flowers and candles next to the garden beds. The mayor left the place without saying a word and little by little, people began to place photos and objects on the fences that guard the place where the giant skull, installed for the Day of the Dead at the Festival of the Candles, still stands. It was there that the former mayor Manzo was minutes before being assassinated, holding his son in his arms while watching the fireworks. On the first anniversary of the former mayor's murder, nine people have been linked to the process, including the alleged intellectual author, while the former head of Carlos Manzo's security, retired Colonel José Manuel Jiménez Aranda, is a fugitive from justice. The mayor, for her part, has responded through her social networks to the hate messages she has received, criticizing her presence at the head of the mayor's office and the rumors that have tried to discredit her and link her romantically to the local deputy and businessman Carlos Bautista Tafolla. "If the dogs bark, it's because we are doing very well," she posted on her social networks in reference to the media attacks.
