Insecurity Perception in Uruapan Rises Amid Tourism Efforts

The perception of safety in the municipality has increased, according to a local official. Authorities in Michoacán have documented that, since 2006, 18 journalists have been murdered or gone missing in the state, with their cases still unresolved. In a meeting with reporters, the Tourism Secretary of the Uruapan City Council blamed the media for creating an unsafe image of the municipality.

Journalist Mauricio Cruz Solís, director of the "Minuto x Minuto" portal, was shot dead on Tuesday night in downtown Uruapan, Michoacán. According to preliminary information from the State Attorney General's Office, the attack occurred around 10:00 PM, just a few meters from the Casa de la Cultura, near the zócalo of Uruapan. Another individual was injured in the incident, and authorities are investigating the crime according to the protocol for crimes against journalists.

The crime occurred shortly after Mauricio Cruz conducted a live broadcast on Facebook, where he interviewed Uruapan's mayor, Carlos Manzo, about a fire at the "Tariacuri" market. Carlos Manzo was elected mayor in 2021 and previously served as a federal deputy for Morena. The State Attorney's Office is keeping details regarding the murder of Mauricio Cruz, who worked as a reporter for local newspapers and directed the "Minuto x Minuto" media outlet, confidential.

Personnel from the Attorney's Office are reviewing security camera footage to identify those responsible for the crime. In a press conference in Morelia, a local deputy from Carlos Manzo's political movement urged tourists to visit Uruapan, stating that organized crime enjoys the area.
