
The journalist from the platform Minuto por Minuto, Mauricio Cruz Solís, lost his life in the city of Uruapan after reporting on a fire in a local market and interviewing the mayor Carlos Manzo. He was later shot by alleged hitmen, who then fled the scene. The news of the fatal attack spread around 10:00 PM on Tuesday.
Communicators from the state strongly condemned the murder, describing it as a "cowardly" attack and demanding that authorities conduct a prompt investigation to clarify the facts. The governor of Michoacán, Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla, also condemned the crime and announced a joint operation to identify those responsible and bring them to justice.
In the last two decades, several journalists in Michoacán have been victims of aggressions by organized crime. The Collective "Ni Uno Más en Michoacán" reported that at least 14 journalists have been killed in the state, also accounting for cases of missing communicators and the violence suffered by the journalistic guild.
The murder of Mauricio Cruz Solís, which occurred in Uruapan, generated expressions of solidarity towards his family, loved ones, and colleagues. They demanded a clear and swift investigation of the case from the authorities, as well as preventing the revictimization of the journalist. Although it is still unknown if Cruz Solís had received prior threats, police sources confirmed his homicide in the city center.
