The mayor of Uruapan, Michoacán, Carlos Manzo Rodríguez, condemned the murder of journalist Mauricio Cruz, which occurred in the city center shortly after he granted him an interview. Manzo indicated that citizens suspect Cruz was involved in illicit activities in the region and emphasized the need for more security resources and a thorough investigation by federal authorities.
During the interview, the mayor revealed that since taking office, he has detected financial irregularities in the local police corporation, which are already under investigation. Manzo also mentioned that former mayor Ignacio Campos made direct threats to him during the transition of power, raising concerns in his administration.
Manzo has repeatedly called for investigations into individuals close to the previous administration, specifically pointing to the former mayor's brother-in-law as someone allegedly linked to organized crime. The mayor also connected the attack on Cruz with the threats he has received since taking office, including threats against his family, and noted that a video shows the moment the journalist was attacked by armed men after getting out of a red pickup truck.
Amid a climate of violence and corruption inherited from previous administrations, Manzo made an urgent call for intervention by authorities to restore peace and security in Uruapan. The mayor expressed his concern about the current situation and highlighted the importance of investigating whether Cruz had reported previous threats.
