Yunes Márquez Faces Backlash After Joining Morena

Miguel Ángel Yunes Márquez announced his affiliation with Morena, triggering various reactions in the political arena. The president of Morena, Claudia Sheinbaum, refrained from commenting on the matter, leaving the decision in the hands of the party structure. In response to criticisms from PAN senator Marko Cortés, who labeled him a "traitor," Yunes Márquez replied by calling Cortés a "mediocre" and a "poor devil," indicating that he does not care about his opinion.

Yunes Márquez asserted that his departure from PAN was for the sake of consistency, as he has been part of the Morena legislative group since September and has supported the party's constitutional reforms. His vote was essential for the Morena caucus to achieve the qualified majority in the Senate and approve the proposals of Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

On the other hand, Marko Cortés, PAN senator, harshly criticized Yunes Márquez's affiliation with Morena, calling him a "traitor to Mexico" and to the Veracruz residents who voted for him. Cortés stated that Yunes was expelled from PAN in November 2024 for voting in favor of reforms promoted by López Obrador, now being rejected by both PAN and Morena.

The governor of Veracruz, Rocío Nahle García, opposed Yunes Márquez's affiliation with Morena, arguing that he does not represent the party's principles. She requested the honesty and justice commission of Morena not to certify Yunes Márquez's membership, based on alleged evidence of resource misappropriation and money laundering by the Yunes family.
