Saúl Monreal, senator from Zacatecas for the Morena party, decided to vote in favor of a law aimed at eliminating nepotism starting in 2030, instead of 2027 as initially proposed. This measure, which was supported by Monreal, will require that relatives of public officials cannot run as candidates in state elections.
"We will leave the decision to the people of Zacatecas," stated Saúl Monreal at a press conference, referring to the President's stance on the issue of nepotism within the party. Despite Claudia Sheinbaum's request for Morena not to present relative candidates in 2027, Monreal pointed out that family participation in politics is a personal and respectable decision.
Also highlighted was the statement from Luisa María Alcalde, president of Morena, who announced that the party would not allow candidacies of direct relatives in the municipal elections of Durango and Veracruz. Despite this stance, it is still unclear what Morena's final decision will be regarding the state elections of 2027.
Saúl Monreal surprised by announcing that he will seek to succeed his brother, David Monreal, in the governorship of Zacatecas in 2027. Despite the disagreements with Sheinbaum, who has expressed differences with this decision, Monreal stated that if the people decide so, he will participate in the electoral contest.
Amid inquiries from the press about his family's participation in politics, Monreal stated that three of his family members are engaged in politics through popular election. For his part, Ricardo Monreal, Saúl's brother and coordinator of Morena in San Lázaro, supported his relative's decision and recalled Andrés Manuel López Obrador's words about letting the people decide.
Saúl Monreal's position in favor of prohibiting nepotism starting in 2030 has generated various opinions within Morena, making it clear that the final decision on family candidacies in 2027 is yet to be defined.
