Televisa-Univisión Acquires Olympic Rights

The company Televisa-Univisión has acquired the broadcasting rights for the Olympic Games for the next eight years, surpassing its main competitor Claro TV-América Móvil, owned by billionaire Carlos Slim Helú, as well as other participants like Fox Sports, Amazon Prime Video, and TV Azteca. According to sources close to the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the official announcement will be made by President Thomas Bach this Tuesday, February 4.

One of the key factors in the IOC's decision was the record audience that Televisa-Univisión achieved during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. At the opening ceremony, 7.5 million viewers tuned into Televisa-Univisión, compared to 1.3 million on Claro TV. The total coverage reached 47.6 million Mexicans through Televisa-Univisión's channels 5 and 9, according to data from TUDN.

With this new agreement, Televisa-Univisión will have exclusive broadcasting rights for Mexico across all available platforms, including open TV, pay TV, internet, apps, and radio, for the following events: 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy, 2028 Summer Olympics in the United States, 2030 Winter Olympics in France, and 2032 Summer Olympics in Australia.

This agreement consolidates Televisa-Univisión as the leader in sports broadcasting in Mexico, ensuring the exclusivity of one of the most important events in the world across all available platforms. The amount of the rights sale was not disclosed, as the IOC distributes the revenue generated by such agreements to benefit sports organizations, athletes, and federations worldwide.

Currently, Claro Sports holds the broadcasting rights for the Olympic Games in Mexico, but with this new agreement, Televisa-Univisión will take over starting with the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. This means that Mexican viewers will be able to enjoy exclusive coverage of the sporting event through Televisa-Univisión’s open television channels and digital platforms, including ViX, its streaming service.
